À partir d'une définition du voyage comme déplacement dans l'espace caractérisé par la rencontre de l'autre, on se propose d'examiner ici les conditions de possibilité d'une histoire culturelle du voyage au XIXe siècle. Cela passe, d'abord, par l'examen de l'historiographie susceptible d'en être le support. Cela implique, ensuite, d'inventorier l'ensemble des sources à même d'autoriser une approche culturelle du voyage, qui peut être celle de multiples formes d'histoire – histoire des sciences, histoire des techniques, histoire de l'art, etc. – mais aussi celle de la géographie culturelle ou des études littéraires. Based on a definition of travelling as a movement into space characterised by the meeting of other people, this article proposes to study the conditions of a possible cultural history of travelling in the 19th century. It starts with the analysis of the possible medium of historiography. It then implies the inventory of all the sources allowing a cultural approach of travelling, which can be the many forms of history – history of science, history of techniques, history of fine arts, etc. – but also history of cultural geography or of literary studies.
