À sa sortie en 1927, le Napoléon d'Abel Gance, qui retrace le parcours de Bonaparte de la chute de la monarchie à la campagne d'Italie, a suscité de vives réactions : de nombreux critiques ont vu dans ce film une apologie du militarisme et de l'autoritarisme, du héros providentiel venant mettre fin au désordre révolutionnaire ; Léon Moussinac dénonce « un Bonaparte pour apprentis fascistes ». L'étude du film et des archives du cinéaste permet de confronter cette réception publique, dans le contexte particulier de la fin des années Vingt, avec la démarche personnelle de Gance, qui construit sa figure du héros sur la culture romantique dont il est imprégné : Victor Hugo, Stendhal, et surtout Thomas Carlyle et son Culte des héros. When released in 1927, Abel Gance's Napoleon, that redraws the route of Bonaparte from the fall of the monarchy until the campaign of Italy, met with animated reactions : numerous critics saw in this film an apology of the militarism and the authoritarianism, the providential hero coming to put an end to the revolutionary disorder ; Léon Moussinac denounces “a Bonaparte for budding fascists”. The study of the film and the archives of the film-maker allows to confront this public reception, in the particular context of the end of the Twenties, with the personal approach of Gance who builds his figure of the hero on his own romantic culture : Victor Hugo, Stendhal, and especially Thomas Carlyle and his Worship of the heroes.
