Illustrateur et écrivain autrichien, né en Bohème, Alfred Kubin (1877-1959) est associé au groupe Blaue Reiter. Il est considéré comme un représentant important de l'Expressionnisme, connu pour ses fantaisies symboliques, sombres et spectrales. Kubin est aussi talentueux en arts graphiques qu'en littérature. Il illustre des œuvres d'Edgar Allan Poe, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Fyodor Dostoïevski et bien d'autres. Il est aussi l'auteur de plusieurs ouvrages, le plus connu étant son roman L'Autre côté (1909), fantaisie apocalyptique située dans un pays imaginaire oppressant, à l'atmosphère claustrophobe et absurde, qui n'est pas sans rappeler celle que Kafka décrivit plus tard. Son univers, qui mêle modernité industrielle et croyances moyenâgeuses, est peuplé d'un fabuleux bestiaire où l'homme tend vers la sagesse de l'animal. Les créatures humaines, animales ou monstres appartiennent à un système linguistique dans lequel ils sont autant de signes fonctionnels dans un univers orienté par l'antériorité personnelle et individuelle. The animal, the man and the monster in Alfred Kubin's oneiric world Born in Bohemia, Alfred Kubin (1877-1959) is an Austrian illustrator and writer associated with the Blaue Reiter group. He is considered an important representative of Expressionism, noted for his dark, spectral, symbolic fantasies. Kubin has both artistic and literary talent. He illustrated works by Edgar Allan Poe, E.T.A. Hoffmann, Fyodor Dostoevsky and others. He was also the author of several books, the best known being his novel The Other Side (1909), an apocalyptic fantasy set in an oppressive imaginary land which had an atmosphere of claustrophobic absurdity reminiscent of the later writings of Franz Kafka. His intern world, which mixes industrial modernity with middle-aged beliefs, is peopled by an astounding bestiary where the human being is a step toward the animal wisdom. The human, animal and monster beings belong to a linguistic system where they constitute some functional signs inside an internal world oriented by the personal and individual anteriority.
