Cet article s'attache à décrire le phénomène qui a permis à la photographie de devenir un outil critique de la représentation au milieu du XIXe siècle. Révélée au public en 1839 sous la forme du daguerréotype, la photographie fut tout d'abord un objet de curiosité dont les performances ont été décrites par la presse généraliste et scientifique pendant tout le processus de révélation du secret de son invention. Soutenue par l'émergence du commerce du portrait photographique au début des années 1840, la photographie deviendra pour la critique d'art un objet de débat lorsque ses implications formelles et théoriques seront mises en regard de la production des artistes français exposée au Salon des beaux-arts. Criticizing photography: the origins of a discourse on photography in French art criticism, 1839-1859This article attempts to describe the phenomenon that allowed photography to become a critical tool of the representation in the mid-nineteenth century. Revealed to the public in 1839 as the daguerreotype, photography was first a curiosity whose performances have been described by the general and scientific press during the whole process of revelation of the secret of the invention. Supported by the emergence of portrait photography in the early 1840s, photography became a debate object for art critics when its formal and theoretical implications will be compared to the production of French artists exhibited at the Salon des beaux-arts.
