Dans l'héritage de Michel de Certeau, profond mais diffus, disséminé à la mesure de son œuvre inachevée – dont bien malin pourrait dire dans quelle direction elle se serait poursuivie après la Fable Mystique – la question mystique apparaît justement comme l'un des lieux les plus troublants, parce qu'elle interroge le rapport de Certeau à l'histoire et sa propre situation par rapport à la tradition qui est la sienne, celle d'une institution religieuse vieille de plus de quatre siècles, la Compagnie de Jésus. Comme on le montre ici par deux événements d'écriture et de lecture particuliers, la question mystique est dans doute celle qui convoque l'une avec l'autre les deux grandes orientations des travaux de Certeau – historien de l'époque moderne et socio-anthropologue du monde contemporain – parce qu'elle mobilise un geste sémiologique qui a été le sien sur ces deux scènes. Posterities of Michel de Certeau: The Mystic Question Within the profound but diffuse legacy of Michel de Certeau —the dissemination of which reflects the unfinished nature of his oeuvre (and the direction the latter would have taken after The Mystic Fable is anyone's guess)— the question of mysticism is indeed one of the most troubling topics. This is because it interrogates de Certeau's relationship to history and his own situation with regard to the tradition of which he is part – that of a four-century-old religious institution, the Society of Jesus. As we will show here through two particular writing and reading events, the question of mysticism is no doubt the one that draws together the two major directions of de Certeau's research as a historian of the early modern period and a social anthropologist of the modern world. This is because it mobilizes a semiological gesture that he adopted on these two stages.
