La décolonisation de l'orientalisme n'a pas eu lieu, si l'on entend par là qu'un événement politique, la fin de l'empire colonial français, aurait amené à une relecture et une transformation politique des savoirs produits par les savants orientalistes pendant la colonisation. Mais elle a eu lieu, pour ainsi dire, sous une autre forme : celle d'une révolution scientifique qui a abouti à une refonte de l'épistémologie des études arabes françaises. L'article montre comment cette refonte s'est opérée en fonction de changements institutionnels et d'évolutions. Il montre, également, comment ces changements se sont traduits par des évolutions dans les savoirs produits, via l'analyse de deux textes d'intellectuels arabes travaillant en France à cette époque, celui d'Anouar Abd-el-Malek, L'orientalisme en crise, et celui du linguiste Lakhdar Souami, Le siècle de Jahiz. Decolonizing Orientalism ? In the case of the French oriental studies, the decolonization did not lead to a political critique of the knowledge French scholars had produced during the colonial period. Rather, it led to epistemological changes that reshaped the theoretical basis of these very oriental studies. This paper shows what institutional as well as sociological factors have been instrumental in this process and why it is a scientific debate, more than a political one, that took place at this time. In order to show how these factors impinged on the epistemological tenets of the discipline, it also embarks upon a study of two texts, written by two Arab scholars who had previously settled in France, that played a key role in this debate : L'orientalisme en crise (Orientalism in Crisis) by the Egyptian sociologist Anwar Abd-el-Malek, and Le siècle de Jahiz (Jahiz's Century) by the Algeria-born Linguist Lakhdar Souami.
