Résumé anglais Forbidden citizenship — the stakes of suffragism, Florence Rochefort. France was one of the last European countries to extend suffrage to women, though it had been claimed since the Revolution. The suffragist movement, long faced with the hostility of political parties, became autonomous only in the interwar period. It was then caught between the opposition of the Senate, which rejected on three occasions bills voted by the Chamber of Deputies, and public opinion, distrustful of a divided feminist movement, accused either of wanting to deprive men of their power or of forgetting the proletarians' condition.
