- LE DRAME DES HARKIS EN 1962 - Charles-Robert Ageron p. 3-6 The ordeal of the Harkis, 1962, Charles-Robert Ageron. On this particular drama of the Algerian war and its present aspects, not the detailed and critical study they deserve but a few still hidden historical truths, in figures and texts. Their acknowledgment would clarify the debate substantially. In particular, on the "cowardly abandonment" of the Harkis by France in 1962, and even the "genocide" they are said to have experienced.
- VICHY ET LA MODERNISATION DE L'ALGÉRIE. INTENTION OU RÉALITÉ ? - Daniel Lefeuvre p. 7-16 Vichy and the modernization of Algeria. Intention or reality? Daniel Lefeuvre. Historians recognize the audacity of the Vichy regime's colonial plans but generally consider them merely as plans coming from technocratie circles with no relation to reality. Newly available archives suggest that for Algeria the reality was quite different. The modernization of colonial policy was wanted by the leaders of the regime and corresponded to immediate and long-term strategic and political preoccupations. Their policy began to be carried out as early as the end of 1940.
- LA SIDÉRURGIE FRANÇAISE DE 1973 À NOS JOURS. DÉGÉNÉRESCENCE ET TRANSFORMATION - Philippe Mioche p. 17-28 The French steel industry since 1973. Degeneration and transformation, Philippe Mioche. The author relates the stages of the decline of the French steel industry since 1973. The fall in production and employ- ment and the closing of many industrial sites were matched by a technological and social conversion leading to the assurance that a new steel industry has a future in France.
- L'HISTOIRE DU TEMPS PRÉSENT DANS L'ENSEIGNEMENT SECONDAIRE DES PAYS DE LA CEE - Jean Wytteman p. 29-38 Contemporary history in secondary schools in the EC countries, Jean-Pierre Wytteman. At a time when a reform of secondary school history programs is under consideration in France, given particularly the prominent place of contemporary history and the fad of a "European history", this survey of all the EC countries may be useful. It provides a measure of French exceptionalism and of its power of persuasion.
DOSSIER : LE CINQUANTENAIRE DU DROIT DE VOTE DES FEMMES
- LA CITOYENNETÉ INTERDITE OU LES ENJEUX DU SUFFRAGISME - Florence Rochefort p. 39-40 Forbidden citizenship — the stakes of suffragism, Florence Rochefort. France was one of the last European countries to extend suffrage to women, though it had been claimed since the Revolution. The suffragist movement, long faced with the hostility of political parties, became autonomous only in the interwar period. It was then caught between the opposition of the Senate, which rejected on three occasions bills voted by the Chamber of Deputies, and public opinion, distrustful of a divided feminist movement, accused either of wanting to deprive men of their power or of forgetting the proletarians' condition.
- LE VOTE DES FEMMES ET LA FIN DE "L'EXCEPTION FRANÇAISE" - Odile Rudelle p. 41-51 The women's vote and the end of "French exceptionalism", Odile Rudelle. The years 1946-1983 were, with respect to suffrage, a period of dynamic difference between genders. In the contexts of Liberation, decolonization, and post cold war, this difference weighed in favor of republican constitutionalism. An analysis of the four elections which registered a significant difference between men and women (1946, 1965, 1974, and 1981) shows that the female electorate may have sought the modernization of French politics rather than the narrow conservatism feared by the opponents of women's suffrage.
- LES ÉLECTRICES FRANÇAISES DE 1945 À 1993 - Janine Mossuz-Lavau p. 67-76 French women voters, 1945 to 1993, Janine Mossuz-Lavau. In five decades French women voters learned how to handle the tool finally at their disposal. Three periods mark the

POINTS DE VUE
- GUERRES DE MÉMOIRE EN FRANCE - Daniel Lindenberg p. 77-96 Memory wars in France, Daniel Lindenberg. The author proposes a transversal analysis of the periods which marked French national memory, from the Revolution to the Algerian war. He seeks to describe and explain the double movement of accumulation and selection characteristic of the link between French identity and the past.
