Cet article propose un état des lieux rapide du transhumanisme contemporain, à travers deux champs de controverses sur les définitions de l'humain et du posthumain. Le premier concerne l'éthique de l'amélioration humaine ; s'y joue la question des limites du libéralisme et des conditions d'exercice de l'autonomie. En réponse aux refus d'une transformation technologique substantielle de l'humanité pour des raisons communautariennes ou relevant d'une éthique de la discussion, les arguments transhumanistes constituent des justifications libérales et libertariennes en faveur d'une modification des normes biologiques. Le second tient à la configuration biopolitique dans laquelle la projection d'un futur posthumain devient possible. S'y affrontent les projets d'émancipation posthumanistes, critiques de l'anthropocentrisme et de l'universalisme modernes, et les ambitions transhumanistes d'un accroissement des capacités de maîtrise du monde. Ces controverses permettent de délimiter le transhumanisme comme un champ sémantique autorisant des recompositions idéologiques multiples, à l'intersection des pensées libérales et de leurs critiques. Interpretations and languages of transhumanism An attempt to provide an overview of contemporary transhumanism, this article engages with two major controversies about the meaning of the human and the posthuman. First, debates about the ethics of human enhancement question the limits of liberalism, and the conditions under which autonomy should be exercised. Against communautarian and deliberative critics opposing substantial technological transformations of the human species, transhumanist arguments support biological modifications on liberal and libertarian grounds. Second, debates about the kind of biopolitics that enables transhumanist narratives of the future draw the distinction between posthumanist emancipatory projects, based on a critique of modern anthropocentrism and universalism, and transhumanist perspectives aimed at the further increase of human power and control over the world. These controversies help understand how transhumanist ideas get contested and decontested, by delineating transhumanism as a semantic field at the crossroads of liberal political thinking and critics.
