Résumé anglais The Russian Campaign Myths and Realities The Russian Campaign is the object of an abundant literature, particularly in the more or less famous writings of the memorialists. A sharp analysis of these texts makes it possible to distinguish between mythology and the realities of the war. It is clear that, concerning the advance of the army in Russia, the demoralization of the troops has often been concealed, while the battle of Borodino has very quickly been presented as a brilliant French victory. Another point is also often put aside : the fascination the French had for Moscow. As for Napoleon's retreat, reality very often transcended mythology : in order to be considered as a veteran of the Napoleonic wars, it was necessary to have participated in the Russian Campaign : the memory has often been recomposed according to this data.
