Résumé anglais Chris Owen, who died in 2018, was a well-known documentary filmmaker who came to Papua New Guinea a couple of years before Independence and left only in 2011. Employed by various national agencies, he took part in most of the films shot in Papua New Guinea. At once director, sound recordist and cameraman, he also lent logistical support to film crews shooting in the country, and was head of the National Film Institute.‪‪ After having evoked his formative years, the article presents the institutional landscape of the 1970s, when Chris Owen and other young expatriates made their first films, since the article tries not only to portray a personal vocation but also to render a shared artistic and political ideal.‪ The piece goes on to discuss two films, ‪ ‪Gogodala‪ ‪ and ‪ ‪Malagan Labadama‪ ‪, and evokes a feature film project that Chris Owen did not manage to complete. Finally, the article presents the activities of the National Film Institute: archives, training and film-making, and indicates the difficulties confronting the institution today.‪‪
