Chris Owen, who died in 2018, was a well-known documentary filmmaker who came to Papua New Guinea a couple of years before Independence and left only in 2011. Employed by various national agencies, he took part in most of the films shot in Papua New Guinea. At once director, sound recordist and cameraman, he also lent logistical support to film crews shooting in the country, and was head of the National Film Institute.‪‪ After having evoked his formative years, the article presents the institutional landscape of the 1970s, when Chris Owen and other young expatriates made their first films, since the article tries not only to portray a personal vocation but also to render a shared artistic and political ideal.‪ The piece goes on to discuss two films, ‪ ‪Gogodala‪ ‪ and ‪ ‪Malagan Labadama‪ ‪, and evokes a feature film project that Chris Owen did not manage to complete. Finally, the article presents the activities of the National Film Institute: archives, training and film-making, and indicates the difficulties confronting the institution today.‪‪
The work of Australian filmmaker Dennis O'Rourke (1945- 2013) covers the colonial and postcolonial history of the Pacific. From Papua New Guinea's Declaration of Independence, for which he produced a document of prime importance for the country's film history (‪ ‪Yumi Yet‪ ‪, 1976), to the emergence of the new forms of symbolic domination constituting (neo)coloniality, the work of Dennis O'Rourke is remarkably constant. Through his concern to describe the subjugation and the experience of “dominated populations” (indigenous peoples, marginalized groups of the rural world), and its documentation of the visuality – “as cultural and political representation” (Mirzoeff, 2011) in Oceania, Dennis O'Rourke gives a careful observation of the interplay between forms of domination through image making and economic and political power relations.‪

‪Authenticity in cinema is elusive and difficult to explain or analyse, especially in narrative feature films that are, ultimately, works of fiction. And yet audiences expect dramatic fictional films to be authentic because they are supposed to be realistic representations of a people or culture. Working against authentic representation are many factors, including the business side of filmmaking that often leads to compromises in order to entertain or to make indigenous cultures accessible to a global market, unrealistic expectations that a single film with its time constraints can fully represent a culture or a people, and the difficulties and challenges of achieving complete authentic representation in a work of fiction. The pursuit of authenticity, however, is important for indigenous people or minority cultures because misrepresentations can displace and replace their actual experiences or realities.‪

    • ‪Disney's ‪ ‪Moana‪ ‪ and the Portrayal of Moral Personhood in Hollywood's Pacific (1932-2016)‪ - David Lipset p. 73-84 accès libre avec résumé avec résumé en anglais
The goal of this essay is not to build an argument about the commercial basis or ideological functions of Hollywood movies. My goal is exegetical or methodological. I want to shift the critique of Hollywood's representations of Pacific peoples and cultures towards how they are and are not depicted as moral persons, the meaning of which I will detail below. I begin by introducing the concept of the moral person in social anthropology and in the work of the Canadian literary critic, Northrop Frye. I then examine three Hollywood movies, ‪ ‪Rain‪ ‪ (1932) and ‪ ‪Blue Hawaii‪ ‪ (1961) in which the moral personhood of Pacific Islanders is reduced and marginalized while Western protagonists are foregrounded, although in different ways. Lastly, I discuss Disney's ‪ ‪Moana‪ ‪ (2016), a movie which excludes Western characters altogether by focusing on the adventures of a pre-contact Polynesian girl. ‪ ‪Moana‪ ‪ is able to do so, I propose, because it is an animated musical. ‪
This article reviews the main issues of the controversy that accompanied the release of the animated film ‪ ‪Moana‪ ‪, by providing a chronicle of the various reactions to which it has given rise, and by evoking the different fields in which contrasting views were expressed. While some elements of this controversy, whose origin is clearly situated in the Pacific and at the instigation of Pacific Islanders, have been widely covered in the French media, we will discuss the particular situation of French Polynesia, where two versions of ‪ ‪Moana‪ ‪ circulated: one in French (‪ ‪Vaiana‪ ‪) and one in Tahitian (‪ ‪Moana‪ ‪), first adaptation in a Polynesian language sponsored by Disney. As the virulence of the debates found elsewhere in the Pacific did not apply to this particular case, we provide an account of what constitutes at first reading an exceptionality of French Polynesia.‪
There have been protracted debates about exoticism in representations of the Pacific, in anthropology, visual arts and the cinema. The film ‪ ‪Tanna‪ ‪, created and filmed in the Vanuatu island of that name by Australian filmmakers Bentley Dean and Martin Butler has been both celebrated and criticised for its representation of the people and place of Vanuatu as exotic. Such adjudications have to confront the complexities of a film that is a co-creation between Australia and Vanuatu, that hovers between ethnographic realist and fictional cinematic imaginaries and simultaneously evokes a sense of distance and difference and a sense of the shared human reality of young love and tragic loss. This article offers an analysis of the film and its critical reception. ‪

‪The island of Tanna has attracted successive generations of filmmakers. Most of them have been invariably fascinated by the story of John Frum, a supernatural figure whose prophecies gave rise during World War Two to a huge indigenous movement of social protest. This paper analyses how these film productions, by presenting the John Frum movement as a perfect expression of the mysterious South Pacific “cargo cults”, actively contributed to shape the image of Tanna and its inhabitants for a worldwide audience. The analysis of these influences will also focus on how these films are perceived by the Tannese, since they themselves became spectators, actors and producers in this film-making process.‪
    • Essai.
In this critical essay, the Polynesian writer Chantal Spitz retraces the history of Pacific representations in Western literature and cinema, denouncing the perpetuation of exoticizing stereotypes and the Indigenous alienation from this new surge of images. A member in 2017 of the ‪ ‪Festival international du film océanien‪ ‪, the main Pacific gathering organised each year in Papeete, she revisits the evolution of the festival since its creation in 2004 and develops a reflection on the ethics that should govern Oceanian productions. Advocating for the implementation of local structures devoted to teaching audiovisual arts, she points to the importance in this era of globalisation of enabling Pacific Islanders to become the actors-producers of their own history.‪
This article focuses on the making of a documentary film on the cultural revival within the ‪ ‪Mā'ohi‪ ‪ Protestant Church in French Polynesia. ‪Moorea and the Two Traditions‪ ‪) shows the various responses to this revival, generating an opposition between “traditional” and “cultural” local churches. Through the genealogy of the project, the examination of the practical conditions of filming and the reactions that followed the broadcasting of the documentary, I analyze the methodological and reflexivity issues at stakes in the filming approach.‪

‪This article describes a pioneering initiative in applied visual anthropology which was undertaken in the 1990s in the United States Territory of American Samoa. In response to the perceived increasing Western media influence in the archipelago, filming skills were developed locally as an Indigenous intervention for the preservation of intangible cultural heritage. In his role at the American Samoa Community College, the author was responsible for training Samoan students in the theory and practice of ethnography and visual anthropology. He collaborated with Samoan colleagues and students to identify and coordinate film projects and events that would contribute to the transmission of aspects of Samoan cultural heritage to the next generation. Through the description of several film projects, this work is conceptualized as an “indigenizing anthropology” effort towards the continuity of intangible cultural heritage in American Samoa.‪
In the early 2000s, the ‪ ‪adck‪ ‪ (‪ ‪Agence de développement de la culture kanak‪ ‪) acquired fourteen reels of films made by a constable (or “gendarme”) in New Caledonia in the years 1950-1960. These exceptional images show the cycle of ceremonies of the yam, a collective session of exorcism and ‪ ‪aé-aé‪ ‪ of Canala and the Isle of Pines. This acquisition is an opportunity to promote this constable, unwillingly, as the “Jean Rouch of the Kanak” and consider these images as an object of heritage. In 2008, filmmaker Gilles Dagneau uses these reels to make a documentary: ‪ ‪Le gendarme Citron. A cinematic adventure in New Caledonia‪ ‪. By filming the world of Citron as Citron films the Kanak world, Gilles Dagneau rebalances the position of the protagonists in a world still dominated by colonization. These reels are also those of a small peasant in social climbing after the Second World War. His socially situated point of view reveals the singularity of the ethnological gaze of those years.‪ ‪ ‪
