Le tournant du XXe siècle est marqué par un renouvellement épistémologique de l'histoire que l'affaire Dreyfus a cristallisé. Des savants ont compris la responsabilité des intellectuels dans les débats de la Cité, de l'Affaire à la Grande Guerre et à la question des responsabilités du conflit. Certains participent aux échanges de cette société civile en action, au sein de la Ligue des Droits de l'Homme et au-delà. Sollicité en 1923 par la Ligue pour trancher un débat commencé dès 1914 en son sein et dans la nébuleuse pacifiste, Pierre Renouvin intervient comme historien du temps présent, participant au récit raisonné d'une histoire en train de se faire. Citizen expertise and civil society on the origins of the great war: the contribution of Pierre Renouvin The beginning of the 20th century was marked by an epistemological renewal of the historical science that the Dreyfus affair crystallized. Scientists have understood the responsibility of intellectuals in the debates of the City: the Dreyfus affair, the Great War and the question of the responsibilities of the conflict. Intellectuals participate in the exchanges of this civil society in action, within the League for Human Rights and beyond. Solicited in 1923 by the League to settle a debate that began in 1914 within the League and in the pacifist nebula, Pierre Renouvin is involved as a historian of the present time.
