| Résumé | Reprenant le dossier des dernières années de la question harkie pendant la guerre d'Algérie et dans l'immédiat après-guerre, C.-R. Ageron tente de démêler les positions des différents acteurs du « drame » : pouvoir politique et militaire français, autorités et populations algériennes ainsi que les harkis eux-mêmes et l'ANP. Il met en avant les violences dont ces anciens supplétifs de l'armée française furent victimes entre 1962 et 1963 et l'indifférence, voire la complaisance, des autorités algériennes à l'égard des responsables de ces représailles. L'attitude des hommes politiques français, âpre-ment critiquée par certaines fractions de l'opinion à l'époque, ne fut pas exempte d'ambiguïtés. Tandis que la controverse sur le nombre de harkis exécutés commençait à enfler, le sort des anciens supplétifs devint un sujet de discussions entre la France et l'Algérie et, à partir de l'été 1962, le gouvernement français tenta d'obtenir des assurances. En vain. L'armée encore présente sur le territoire algérien s'efforça alors de protéger ses anciens soldats et leurs familles sans toujours parvenir à les rapatrier. C'est en 1970 seulement que la question diplomatique fut réglée laissant ouverte une guerre des mémoires que l'historien a voulu, ici, apaiser. | |
| Résumé anglais | In taking up again the issue of the final years of the harki (Algerian soldier fighting for the French) question during the Algerian war and just afterwards, C-R Ageron attempts to unravel the positions of the various actors of the "drama" : French military and political power, Algerian authori ties and populations as well as the harkis themselves and the ANP. He points to the violences the former back-up troops of the French army were victim of between 1962 and 1963 and the indifference or even the collusion of the Algerian authorities toward those responsible for the reprisals. The attitude of the French politicians, bitterly criticized by certain wings of public opinion at the time, was not without its ambiguities either. While the controversy on the number of harkis executed began to blow up, the fate of the former back-up troops became a subject of discussions between France and Algeria, and as of summer 1962, the French government tried to obtain assurances. In vain. The army still present on the Algerian territory attempted to protect its former soldiers and their families without managing to repatriate them. It was only in 1970 that the diplomatic question was settled, leaving open a war ofmemories that this historian wants to soothe. | |
