Au sud du Brésil comme ailleurs dans le monde, la culture du riz ne se cantonne pas seulement à la production d'une céréale. L'action de cultiver la terre contribue à faire émerger des identités et des rapports sociaux d'autant plus prégnants qu'ils sont associés à la réussite professionnelle de cette production. Cet article a pour objectif de comprendre comment, dans l'État le plus méridional du Brésil, le riz a permis d'une part la reconstruction identitaire du gaucho comme marqueur d'un ancrage territorial et d'autre part de modifier considérablement les paysages et l'économie régionale. On y discutera la notion de bassin de production comme un outil de compréhension de la spatialité du produit. Le propos se compose en deux parties : la première analyse le codage socio-économique initial du riz au Rio Grande do Sul et la seconde aborde les métissages socio-professionnels associés à la diffusion spatiale de l'activité productive. As in other places in the world, the agricultural activity of rice growing in Southern Brazil is not merely a mean to get cereals. The fact that people cultivate the land contributes to bring to the foreground local identities all the more as they are positively associated with the professional success of rice growers. The aim of this article is to understand how, in the most Southern state of Brazil, rice has enabled the reconstruction of the gaucho identity as a sign of a territorial anchoring. From a geographical point of view the subject expands in two parts: the first one analyzes the initial socio-economic coding of rice in Rio Grande do Sul and the second one addresses the social and occupational interbreeding associated with the spatial diffusion of productive activity.
