Cette contribution a pour objet un aspect négligé de la pensée d'Adam Smith : sa pensée militaire. La première partie résume la théorie morale développée par Smith dans sa Théorie des sentiments moraux, en introduisant la figure du spectateur impartial et celle de l'homme parfaitement vertueux. Les deuxième et troisième parties montrent comment Smith aborde la question de la guerre dans le cadre de cette théorie, la deuxième partie portant sur le spectateur impartial en situation de guerre, la troisième sur le conflit entre vertus aimables et vertus héroïques. La quatrième partie est consacrée aux propos de Smith concernant la guerre juste. La cinquième porte sur les relations entre États et plus particulièrement sur les conditions requises pour que ceux-ci se respectent mutuellement. This contribution covers a neglected aspect of the thinking of Adam Smith: his military thinking. The first part develops the moral theory developed by Smith in his Theory of moral sentiments, introducing the figure of the impartial spectator and that of the perfectly virtuous man. The second and third parts show how Smith approaches the question of war in the context of this theory, the second part covering the impartial spectator in a war situation and the third on the conflict between amiable virtues and heroic virtues. The fourth part is devoted to Smith's proposals on just war. The fifth part covers relations between States and more particularly on the required conditions for them to respect each other mutually.
