Résumé anglais At the turn of the 1950s, faced with a French communist party widely perceived by many political and military leaders as a”fifth column” under the orders of Moscow, the French government attempted to set up a global and coherent “psychological” counter-offensive intended to protect both the armed forces and the nation from the”subversive peril”. To the institutional edifice was added the search for a doctrine that could reunite the Nation and affirm the special characteristics of France in the Atlantic context. This process appears, finally, to be one of the most tangible manifestations of the French style McCarthyism that is still in the main poorly understood.
