Résumé anglais Entry of women into the armed forces is a reality. This means that the implications of motherhood for availability to participate in operations need to be considered. Being a mother is not something exceptional, but a particular phase in a woman's life: the first years when the relationship with a young child develops. Here, we are throwing the spotlight on the implications and possible consequences of an early mother-child separation. An examination, drawing on studies by child psychiatrists, of all the factors involved could provide the higher command with useful avenues for reflecting on and assessing, on a case-by-case basis, the appropriateness of sending mothers of very young children on external operations.
