Cet article prend acte de l'évolution opposant à une lente « socialisation » des militaires une non moins lente mais réelle marginalisation de ses élites. Pour le premier constat, il analyse la double caractéristique d'exemplarité et de singularité d'une communauté militaire, puis les transformations qui conduisent à la structuration et à l'intégration sociétale de cette dernière. Il explique le second par une désacralisation progressive du métier des armes, aboutissant à la primauté actuelle de préoccupations économiques et sociales, et par les ruptures professionnelles, éthiques et intellectuelles subies par les armées dans la seconde partie du siècle dernier. Condamnée par l'histoire, à contre-courant des réalités actuelles, la « technicisation » des leviers de l'action militaire et publique doit laisser place à une association propre à renforcer notre capacité à affronter les défis qui nous attendent. This article recognises the development that contrasts a slow socialisation of soldiers with a marginalisation that is no less slow of their élites. For the first observation, it analyses the two characteristics of a military community: having an exemplary nature and being unusual. It then looks at the transformations that lead to structuring and social integration of the community. It explains the second observation by progressive disappearance of mystique in the profession of soldiering, resulting in the current primacy of economic and social concerns, and by the sharp occupational, ethical and intellectual about-turns undergone by armed forces in the second half of the last century. The increasingly technical nature of instruments used by military and public action having been condemned by history, as running against the tide of current realities, the transformation should be replaced by an association that can strengthen our ability to confront the challenges awaiting us.
