Des études sociologiques récentes portant sur les nouvelles sociabilités numériques ont démontré qu'Internet offrait une forme originale d'espace public. Certains militaires s'y sont spontanément exprimés à travers la création d'un blog ou la participation à des forums de discussion spécifiques. Or leur parole semble aujourd'hui davantage relayée par d'autres acteurs civils, médiatiques et associatifs, ce qui a pour effet de les reléguer insensiblement à une forme de « cantonnement numérique ». En effet, si elle s'adapte particulièrement bien au communautarisme inhérent au grand fourre-tout qu'est l'espace public numérique, la spécificité militaire, marquée sur le Web par un repli sur un entre soi convivial et identitaire d'arme ou de spécialité, contribue à pérenniser l'invisibilité sociale des militaires, même si c'est sous une forme nouvelle et technologiquement innovante. Recent sociological studies relating to the new digital social media have shown that the Internet provides an unusual type of public forum. Some people in the military have proactively used the Web as a means of expression, by creating blogs or participating in specific chatrooms. What they are saying now seems to be increasingly taken up by other people—civilians, media communicators and associations—with the result that they are imperceptibly relegated to a form of “digital ghettoisation”. If the specifically military element adjusts particularly well to the formation of community groups that characterises the public-space rag-bag of the Internet, that element, characterised in cyberspace by withdrawal into a matey identification with those dealing with similar weapons or specialities, is helping perpetuate soldiers' social invisibility, even if it is in a new and technologically innovative form.
