Le cérémonial militaire actuel perpétue un rituel codifié par Louis XIV qui traduit de façon remarquable la pérennité de l'État par-delà les changements de régime. Les honneurs dus au chef de l'État par les armées expriment aujourd'hui l'hommage de la nation à celui qui la représente, comme autrefois ils s'attachaient à celui qui l'incarnait. Ces honneurs sont rendus, dans un mode dégradé selon une échelle graduée, à ceux qui détiennent une part de l'autorité publique ou ont mérité, par leurs actions, la reconnaissance officielle de l'État. The current military ceremonial of paying tribute to or honouring perpetuates a rite codified by Louis XIV that translates in remarkable fashion the continuity of the State down through changes in regime. The honouring that is due to the Head of State by the armed forces is today expressed by the tribute that the nation pays to the person who represents it, in the same way as that honouring used to be given to the person who personified the State. Such honouring is given, in degraded mode and on a graduated scale, to those who hold some part of the public authority or who have, through their actions, merited official recognition from the State.
