	Résumé	Il y a mille cinq cents ans, le roi burgonde Sigismond fondait une abbaye sur le lieu du supplice de saint Maurice. Il était le premier prince à manifester son attachement au légionnaire venu de Thébaïde, en Égypte, et mort en martyr à Agaune. Après lui, d'autres empereurs, rois ou ducs ont honoré le saint soldat car celui-ci incarne un modèle qui valorise le service du prince et l'obéissance. Les images consacrées à saint Maurice, dans le royaume de France comme dans l'empire, insistent sur ces caractéristiques, mais l'exemple du Thébain peut aussi servir à exhorter le monarque, à lui rappeler qu'il doit veiller à la nature des ordres qu'il donne, à avertir aussi les grands laïcs qui pouvaient être tentés de rejoindre le pape, et même à dénoncer les décisions et volontés du pontife romain. 	Résumé anglais	1500 years ago, the Burgundian King Sigismond founded an abbey on the place of execution of Saint Maurice. He was the first “prince” to show his attachment for the legionnaire who came from Thebaid in Egypt and died a martyr's death in Agaune. After him, other emperors, kings, or dukes honoured the soldier saint because he personified a model that gave importance to service to the prince and to obedience. The images devoted to Saint Maurice, in the Kingdom of France and in the French Empire, emphasized these characteristics, but the example of the Thebian can also serve to exhort the monarch, to remind them that they should also be watchful about the nature of the orders that they give, and to warn secular leaders who might be tempted to join the Pope, and even to denounce the decisions and wishes of the Roman Pontiff.
