Née de la guerre, l'Europe se trouve à l'issue de la Seconde Guerre mondiale contrainte à la paix et à l'unité, l'une ne pouvant aller sans l'autre. Et l'unité progressera à la faveur d'une paix, fruit de la guerre froide et de la protection américaine. Seule la France tentera de défendre le concept d'une défense européenne autonome, pour finir par rentrer dans le rang, au moment même où la guerre est à nouveau aux portes de l'Europe et qu'une prolifération terroriste sur son sol met au défi l'Union de donner enfin sens à une politique commune de sécurité et de défense. Born from war, Europe found itself at the end of the Second World War forced to accept peace and unity, one cannot exist without the other. And the unity will progress in favour of peace, the result of the cold war and American protection. France alone attempted to defend the concept of an autonomous European defence, ending by joining the ranks, at the very moment when war was again at the gates of Europe and when the proliferation of terrorists on its soil challenged the Union to finally make sense of a common policy of security and defence.
