L'article présenté ici tire son origine d'une question : si les métanarrations n'existent plus, pourquoi n'en est-il pas autant du social ? La notion de “roi secret”, élaborée par Simmel dans Le conflit de la culture moderne, est le périmètre réfléchi où cette question sera développée. Après avoir considéré cette notion comme le centre de rotation de l'imaginaire social, l'hypothèse que nous tenterons d'argumenter est destinée à identifier dans la contemporanéité la présence d'un nouveau monarque sans qualités métanarratives. Son règne n'est pas légitimé par une vision du monde dotée de sens mais, au contraire, par la neutralisation de tous les sens ; c'est pour cette raison qu'on nommera ce souverain, né du conflit de la culture post-moderne, le Roi neutre. C'est ce nouveau roi secret qui nous place, pour la première fois, à l'intérieur d'une sphère vide de sens, capable, de contenir et de métamorphoser l'hétérogénéité des imaginaires sociaux contemporains dans son royaume réticulaire reproduit de manière numérique. This paper is driven by the following question: If metanarratives have collapsed in the postmodern age, why haven't social realities ended? The metaphor of the “hidden king” used by Georg Simmel in the essay, The Conflict in Modern Culture (1918), is the theoretical perimeter in which this key issue will be framed. After considering this notion as the axis of the social imaginary, we will try to identify—in contemporary society—the presence of a new monarch without metanarrative qualities. His kingdom, we will argue, is not legitimized by a Weltanschauung (worldview) filled with meaning, but, on the contrary, by the neutralization of meaning. It is for this reason that we name the monarch born from the conflict of postmodern culture the “neutral king.” For the first time, this new hidden king places us within a realm that is void of meaning, but which is able to contain and transform the heterogeneity of contemporary social imaginaries in its reticular kingdom that is digitally reproduced.
