Cet article examinera trois CD de la flûtiste jazz afro-américaine Nicole Mitchell, et les utilisera pour étudier l'afrofuturisme. Elle proposera que l'afrofuturisme soit perçu comme un imaginaire, plutôt que simplement comme un « genre » de production artistique. Elle montrera l'influence de l'écrivain afrofuturiste Octavia Butler sur Mitchell, puis exposera les diverses manières par lesquelles Butler et Mitchell ont exprimé l'imaginaire afrofuturiste. Elle proposera que nous trouvons deux orientations qui sont visiblement apparemment radicalement différentes dans les productions artistiques afrofuturistes : « fantasme spatial » d'une part, et critique sociale « réaliste » d'autre part. Cet exposé conclura en soutenant que cela montre que l'imaginaire afrofuturiste doit plutôt être examiné dialectiquement, et que ces orientations contradictoires peuvent être perçues comme des éléments essentiels d'un ensemble complexe. This article examines three CDs by the African-American jazz flautist Nicole Mitchell, and uses them as a way of considering Afrofuturism. It will suggest that Afrofuturism should be seen as an imaginary rather than simply as a “genre” of artistic production. It will show the impact of Afrofuturist writer Octavia Butler on Mitchell, and will then draw out the different ways that Butler and Mitchell have expressed the Afrofuturist imaginary. It will suggest that we can find two apparently radically different orientations in Afrofuturist artistic productions: “space fantasy” on the one hand, and “realist” social criticism on the other. The paper will end by arguing that this shows that the Afrofuturist imaginary is best considered dialectically, and that these contradictory orientations can be seen as vital parts of a complex whole.
