Carthagène des Indes en Colombie et Veracruz au Mexique étaient des villes fortifiées et bastionnées qui firent face aux assauts des pirates et, en même temps, des ports importants pour les routes commerciales et la navigation. Les projets de défense de Carthagène et de Veracruz eurent leur origine dans le plan global de protection fait par Juan Bautista et Tiburzio Spannocchi. Ce dernier commanda le corps d'ingénieurs militaires qui travailla dans la planification et la construction de fortifications dans la Méditerranée. Ses expériences furent fondamentales pour la protection des côtes américaines. Bautista Antonelli, ingénieur militaire, fut chargé du projet de défense des ports du Nouveau Monde et sa participation fut très importante pour la création du plan de protection de Carthagène et de Veracruz. Bautista Antonelli était architecte et ingénieur militaire, et il travailla avec son frère, Juan Bautista Antonelli, et Vespusiano Gonzaga Colonna, dans l'aménagement de terrains et le tracé de routes pour les troupes au Portugal. Cartagena de Indias in Colombia and Veracruz in Mexico were fortified and bastioned cities that faced the onslaught of piracy and were also major ports in the trade and shipping routes. The common origin of the project to defend Cartagena and Veracruz was the protection plan developed by Juan Bautista and Tiburzio Spannocchi, who commanded the military engineers that worked on the planning and construction of fortifications in the Mediterranean, and whose experiences were fundamental in the protection of American shores. The figure of Bautista Antonelli was essential for the protection plan of Cartagena and Veracruz ; he was the military engineer in charge of defense projects for the New World ports. Bautista Antonelli, architect and military engineer had worked with his brother on the conditioning of terrain and roads for the troops in Portugal.
