| Résumé |
L'alliance entre la Syrie et l'Iran est une caractéristique
importante et persistante du paysage politique du Moyen-Orient depuis 1979. Cet article commence par fournir
un bref cadre conceptuel pour comprendre les forces qui
ont façonné et influencé l'évolution et la longévité de
l'alliance syro-iranienne. Il explique et analyse ensuite la
politique iranienne au regard des réalités changeantes sur
le terrain, notamment la transformation du conflit syrien
en une guerre par procuration, la montée et la chute de
l'État islamique et les implications de l'intervention russe
sur le conflit. Il affirme enfin que si Téhéran a réussi à
assurer la survie du régime d'Assad, cela a eu un prix
élevé pour l'Iran en termes d'hommes et de matériel,

The alliance between Syria and Iran has been an important
and persistent feature on the political landscape of the
Middle East since 1979. This article begins by providing a
brief conceptual and analytical framework to understand
the forces that have shaped and influenced the evolution
and longevity of the Syrian-Iranian alliance. It then
focuses on the 2011 Syrian uprising and Iran's policies
and involvement over the past nine years. It explains and
analyzes Iran's evolving role, perceptions, and interests
in the Syrian conflict. The article assesses Iranian policy
in view of the changing realities on the ground, most
notably, the transformation of the Syrian conflict into a
proxy war, the rise and fall of ISIL, and the implications
of the Russian intervention in the conflict. It argues while
Tehran has succeeded in ensuring the survival of the
Assad regime, this has come at a heavy price for Iran in
terms of men and materiel, and its regional standing and
