Walter Benjamin et Siegfried Kracauer partagent une analyse de la dimension potentielle-ment critique de l'histoire, d'une photographie ou d'un film. Dans leur foulée, la principale caractéristique de l'histoire du cinéma est de vouloir envisager ensemble des questions d'historiographie et des questions de cinéma (en même temps que des problèmes d'analyse de films). Avec une attention portée à la figure ambivalente du chiffonnier dans l'imaginaire intellectuel et artistique des XIXe et XXe siècles, ce texte aborde deux concepts-clés, la fantas-magorie et la barbarie, que Benjamin et Kracauer considèrent dans leurs dimensions positive et négative, comme le cinéma et l'histoire. Walter Benjamin and Siegfried Kracauer share the way they analyse the critical potential of History, of a photograph or a film. In their wake, the main feature of cinema history is its desire to envisage together questions of historiography as well as questions of cinema (and thus also questions of films analysis). With a focus on the ragpicker's ambivalent figure in the intellectual and artistic imagination of the 19th and 20th centuries, this text addresses two key concepts, phantasmagoria and barbarism, which Benjamin and Kracauer envisage in their positive and negative dimensions, such as cinema and history.
