L'évolution du Japon durant ces vingt dernières années reflète autant les bouleversements intervenus sur la scène politique internationale que la mutation de la société japonaise. Partant de ce constat, Karoline Postel-Vinay montre comment le Japon insulaire de la fin des années 70, « géant économique, nain politique », a progressivement évolué vers un pays bien davantage ouvert vers l'international. Ainsi, la coopération avec l'Union européenne ne se limite plus aujourd'hui aux échanges économiques. De même, le Japon joue un rôle de plus en plus actif sur la scène politique asiatique. Japan 1979-1999: the End of Insularity, by Karoline Postel-Vinay Japan's position in the world has changed considerably over the past 20 years. By 1979 she had already acquired great economie power, which could be felt internationally. But her political influence remained weak. During the 1980s a transformation took place which became quite visible by the beginning of the next decade. The Nakasone government's policy of internationalization was followed ― or sometimes anticipated ― by the growing openness of Japanese society itself to the outside world. The end of the Cold War upset the established international order and the Japanese political scene as well.
