Pour une relecture culturelle de la station de sports d'hiver moderne An expression of modernity : For a new cultural interpretation of the modern winter resort Marc Chevallier Résumé : L'architecture et l'urbanisme de la station de sports d'hiver construite au cours des 30 années d'après-guerre ne peuvent plus être compris selon la seule perspective économiste ou le déni « écologiste ». Ces formes, dont Courchevel a été un laboratoire dès 1946, sont le fruit d'un imaginaire et d'une culture développés dans l'entre-deux-guerres. Elles parlent d'une mythologie moderne profondément inscrite dans la socioculture du XXe siècle. Au-delà de la doctrine fonctionnaliste énoncée, elles révèlent l'idéal démocratique « égalitaire-émancipé » mais encore une esthétique moderne aux ressorts hygiénistes qui trouve sur l'Alpe hivernale enneigée un espace propre à son épanouissement. The architecture and planning of the winter resorts built during the thirty years following the Second World War can no longer be understood from a purely economic viewpoint or in terms of ecological arguments. The structures and forms used in resorts such as Courchevel, which was a laboratory for such developments as early as 1 946, are the fruit of the imaginery and a culture developed between the two Second World Wars. They bear witness to a modern mythology deeply rooted in the socio-culural fabric of the 20th century. Beyond the expression of the functionalist doctrine, the forms reveal not only the « emancipated-egalitarian » democratic ideal but also a modern design inspired by the needs of health-seekers which, in the snowy winter alpine landscape, finds an ideal space in which it can flourish.
