The development of a new approach to planning and architecture in mountain areas Jean-François Lyon-Caen Resume : C'est à partir de l'examen des débats soulevés par les choix techniques nécessaires à la conception de la station de Courchevel 1850 - dans les domaines de l'urbanisme et de l'architecture - qu'apparaît la recherche d'une pensée moderne pour l'aménagement des espaces touristiques d'altitude. Cette pensée est décrite dans cet article, en mettant en parallèle d'une part les réflexions produites pour le premier projet d'aménagement élaboré par la mission du Secrétariat d'Etat aux Sports en 1942 et d'autre part les actions engagées sur le terrain pour la mise en œuvre effective de la station à partir de 1946, sous la conduite de Laurent Chappis urbaniste, Denys Pradelle architecte, et de l'équipe technique des Ponts et Chaussées placée sous la responsabilité de Maurice Michaud ingénieur des Ponts et Chaussées. Par la comparaison entre les premières idées émises lors d'études préalables et les choix retenus pour les réalisations de ce qui deviendra la première station internationale de sports d'hiver française d'une part, et en analysant certains aspects techniques liés à la mise en œuvre de la station d'autre part, on montrera comment cette expérience révèle l'invention d'une pensée particulière sur l'espace montagnard, mais aussi les conditions effectives de son expérimentation. An analysis of the debates fuelled by the technical decisions that had to be made in designing the French alpine resort of Courchevel 1850 - in relation to both planning and architectural aspects — reveals a search for a modern way of thinking in the development of mountain tourist areas. The article describes this new approach by comparing, on the one hand, the reflections and comments made at the time of the first development project prepared by a committee of the Secretary of State for Sports in 1 942, and, on the other, the work carried out on site to implement the project from 1946. The project was conducted under the direction of Laurent Chappis, planner, Denys Pradelle, architect, and the technical team of Ponts et Chausées (the Highways Department), under the responsa- bility of Maurice Michaud, engineer with Ponts et Chaussées. By comparing the first ideas voiced at the time of the preliminary studies with the choices made in building the resort, later to become the first international winter sports resort in France, and then by analysing certain technical aspects linked to the implementation of the project, the author shows how this experience reveals the development of a new way of thinking about mountain areas.
