Selon l'historiographie dominante, la Guyane française passe sous la férule du régime de Vichy à compter de la débâcle de mai 1940. Au prisme d'une étude du fonctionnement du système éducatif au plus près des acteurs du moment vichyste (1940-1943), cet article se propose de revisiter cette vérité communément établie. Il soutient que l'État français est en Guyane plus colonial que vichyste. Autrement dit, la politique scolaire menée dans ce territoire montre bien des accommodements dans le gouvernement de cette « vieille colonie » qui conduisent à repenser l'autoritarisme du régime de Vichy. According to the prevailing historiography, French Guyana passed under the rule of the Vichy Regime following the debacle of May 1940. Through the prism of a study of the functioning of the educational system by means of a close examination of the roles of the various actors involved under the Vichy regime (1940-1943), this article proposes to revisit this widely held truth. It suggests that in Guyana the État français (French State) was more colonial than Vichyist. In other words, the educational policy implemented in the territory displays clear accommodations in the governing of this “old colony” which prompts us to re-evaluate the authoritarianism of the Vichy regime.
