Comment les paysans italiens, notamment toscans, ont-ils appris la politique au XIXe siècle dans le cadre du nouvel État unifié ? Le problème est étroitement lié à l'histoire de l'unification et de l'intégration nationale de l'Italie. La période des années 1860 qui constitue la transition étatique, avec la proclamation du nouveau royaume, permet de suivre la progression des nouveaux idéaux nationaux et libéraux dans les campagnes et d'envisager la réalité des vecteurs de la nouvelle citoyenneté pour les métayers toscans. Le bilan de cette œuvre de nationalisation et d'apprentissage politique met en lumière une réelle portée intégratrice de l'État libéral longtemps sous-estimée par l'historiographie italienne qui a mis au premier plan les déceptions des lendemains du Risorgimento. The problem of the way the Italian – and more exactly the Tuscan – countryside entered politics in the XIXth century is connected to the history of national unification and integration of the new Kingdom of Italy. The events of the 1860s which determined the politic transition to the new State system show us the progress of new national and liberal ideas in the countryside. These experiences let us to reconstruct the actual means of building citizenship for tuscan sharecroppers. The assessment of this process of nationalization and of political apprenticeship sets a new interpretation of the positive role of liberal italian State which has always been considered by historians the origin of Post-Risorgimento great disappointment.
