Cet article analyse les ressorts structuraux et socio-biographiques des engagements d'hommes ordinaires dans des violences extrêmes à partir du cas de 62 combattants de l'Organisation armée secrète jugés pour avoir assassiné 129 personnes à Mostaganem à la fin de la guerre d'Algérie. En croisant l'analyse socio-spatiale des cycles de ségrégation et l'analyse prosopographique des parcours combattants, l'article montre que la violence trouve son origine dans l'organisation de cette ville coloniale moyenne du littoral algérien. Le modèle proposé repense également les liens entre structures et événement guerrier en montrant que le conflit algérien s'inscrit dans un ordre colonial qu'il matérialise et exacerbe. This article analyses the structural and socio-biographical factors governing the engagement of ordinary men in extreme violence using the case of 62 combatants belonging to the Organisation Armée Secrète, convicted of the murder of 129 people in Mostaganem at the end of the Algerian War. By combining socio-spatial analysis of cycles of segregation and prosopographical analysis of the combatants' trajectories, the article shows that the origin of the violence lies in the organization of this average colonial city on the Algerian coast. The model proposed also rethinks the links between structures and belligerent events by showing that the Algerian conflict fits within a colonial order which it materializes and exacerbates.
