Résumé anglais Although the Truth and Reconciliation Commission identifies racism as one of the structural causes of the internal armed conflict (1980-2000), the memory processes in Peru remain following (self)exclusionary patterns. The “indigenous memories” has not gained enough traction to become an academic object of study, but the approaches to their analysis have been done by different disciplines that amalgamate them under the category of “victims”. In this article I reflect on two reasons that might be impacting on persistence of this scenario, therefore I contend that the memory and identity processes in Peru are strategically limited by the society's organisation as created by the political and intellectual elites: the transformation of a multicultural society into a mestizo nation-state.
