Le 30 mars 1981, le gangster Carlos La Sombra est assassiné en prison à Porto Rico. Sa mort déclenche une guerre de pouvoir sanglante dans le milieu carcéral portoricain et marque la naissance du gang des Ñetas. À partir de la fin des années 1990, ces derniers amorcent la rédaction d'un livre – le Liderato – faisant le récit de la vie du fondateur. Appartenir au gang, c'est dès lors connaître cette histoire et suivre ce modèle. Surtout, de nouvelles figures de chef s'imposent au sein de l'organisation : ceux qui écrivent la légende de Carlos gagnent en pouvoir et autorité. Cet article revient sur l'écriture et la circulation de cette histoire dans le monde ñetas, et sur la fabrique narrative du gangster pénitent et politiquement radical comme outil de façonnage des figures d'autorité. On the 30th of March 1981 the gangster Carlos La Sombra was assassinated in prison in Porto Rico. His death unleashed a bloody power-struggle in Porto Rico's prison world and marked the birth of the Ñetas gang. At the end of the 1990s gang members initiated the writing of a book entitled Liderato, recounting the life of their founder. From this moment, gang belonging came to be about knowing this history and following its model. Above all, this imposes new exemplars of leadership within the organisation such that those who write the legend of Carlos gain in power and authority. This article traces the process of writing and circulating this history in the world of the Ñetas, and thus the fabrication, through narrative, of the penitent and politically radical gangster.
