Cet article analyse les pratiques de démobilisation de certains publics de la participation et leurs effets quant au rapport à l'espace dans les quartiers populaires. Il montre qu'au-delà des ressources détenues par les groupes résidant dans ces espaces, des acteurs et actrices intermédiaires jouent un rôle central dans la mobilisation ou non de certains publics. Ici, les hommes des groupes ethniques minorisés sont exclus des dispositifs participatifs, car les causes qu'ils portent ne sont pas mises à l'agenda par les animatrices de la participation. En conséquence, on assiste à leur repli communautaire sur l'espace de la mosquée et à la construction d'un rapport contraint au quartier. Leur mise à l'écart est renforcée par leur « remise de soi » à un représentant associatif qui ne défend pas réellement leurs intérêts. This article analyses how certain groups are excluded from participation and the effects of this on the relationship to space in working-class neighbourhoods. It shows that beyond the resources held by the groups living in these areas, intermediate actors play a central role in the participation or otherwise of certain groups. In this case, men from minority ethnic groups are excluded from participatory mechanisms because the issues they bring to the table are not placed on the agenda by the facilitators. This results in community withdrawal into the neighbourhood space of the mosque and in the construction of a restricted relationship with the neighbourhood. The marginalisation of these populations is reinforced by their “surrender” to a voluntary sector representative who does not really defend their interests.
