À partir de la situation de la famille Demol, tirée des résultats d'une recherche doctorale en cours, je propose dans cet article de montrer comment les intervenants sociaux d'un service d'accompagnement socioéducatif (SASE) de Bruxelles s'emploient à intervenir auprès d'un public qui ne l'a pas (vraiment) demandé. Je confronte la thèse d'une « autonomie-condition » (Ehrenberg, 2012) à la façon dont elle est pratiquée en situation. Pour cela, je montre d'abord comment les pratiques des intervenants sociaux sont affectées par la nature de la relation qui les lie à leur public ; j'expose ensuite comment ils cherchent à intervenir pour induire un changement chez les bénéficiaires, en (ré)interprétant en permanence à qui ils ont affaire ; je présente enfin, à l'aide de la métaphore d'un match de football mobilisé par Norbert Elias, comment par ce travail de repérage ils se repèrent en fait au sein d'une « configuration ». From the situation of the Demol family drawn from the results of an ongoing doctoral research, I propose in this paper to show how the social workers of a socio-educational support service (SASE) in Brussels are working to intervene with an audience that has not (really) asked for it. I confront the thesis of an “autonomy-condition” (Ehrenberg, 2012) with the way it is practiced in a situation. To do this, I first show how the practices of social workers are affected by the nature of the relationship between them and their audience. I then show how they seek to intervene to induce a change in them, by constantly (re)interpreting who they are dealing with. Finally, by using the metaphor of a football match used by Norbert Elias, I show how, through this spotting work, they actually find their way within a “configuration”.
