La marche est l'action la plus évidente de l'espèce humaine, distinguant l'humain des autres mammifères et accompagnant son développement multimillénaire. Pour autant, elle a profondément changé de statut depuis le développement de moyens de transport mécaniques. Perdurent au cœur de l'expérience humaine trois grandes fonctions : la marche peut être utilitaire et servir, notamment aux militaires, à exercer une forme de souveraineté sur un territoire. Elle porte également des fonctions transformatrices physiques, intellectuelles et spirituelles millénaires. Elle est, enfin, l'instrument d'une exploration du monde à la fois intime et partagée. Walking is the most noticeable action of the human species; it distinguishes humans from other mammals and has followed them over the many thousands of years of their evolution. However, marling has undergone a profound change in status since the development of mechanical means of transport. At the heart of human experience, three major functions of walking endure—it is practical and can, notably for the military, serve to exercise a form of sovereignty over a territory. It also has age-old physical, intellectual and spiritual transformative powers. And finally, it is a means of exploring the world in both an intimate and shared manner.
