L'engouement actuel pour l'Intelligence Artificielle sous ses formes variées ne s'explique pas uniquement par l'alliance qui s'est nouée entre le capitalisme financier et le développement technologique, ni par la relation qui existe entre l'innovation technologique et l'éco-nomie dite de l'attention. La lecture des anthropologues et des philosophes des techniques qui ont analysé les rapports entre techniques et civilisation apparaît essentielle pour comprendre ce qui se joue culturellement dans le développement actuel des technologies intégrant de l'IA. Si l'engouement est général, c'est qu'une axiologie cohérente se déploie à l'échelle mondiale, inscrite certes dans la continuité des valeurs de la modernité, mais également susceptible de répondre à ce qu'on peut identifier comme un besoin généralisé de dépendance affective à la technologie. Plus précisément, ce besoin de dépendance est devenu mondialement prégnant et saillant, car la matérialité technique, grâce aux récentes innovations, est en train de réussir à associer de façon inédite les valeurs de la modernité compatibles avec celles des religions monothéistes, tout en renouant avec des valeurs animistes qui n'ont jamais disparu. Artificial Intelligence's current success, in its various forms, cannot only be explained by the alliance between financial capitalism and technological development, nor by the relationship between technological innovation and the so-called attention economy. From the viewpoint adopted in this contribution of historical anthropology of technology, it seems insufficient to denounce the risk of submission to techno-determinist logics, themselves conceived as the result of neo-liberal socio-economic dynamics. In this respect, the reading of anthropologists and philosophers of technology who have analyzed the relationship between technology and civilization appears essential to understand what is culturally at stake in the current development of technologies integrating AI. If the craze is general, it is because a coherent axiology is being deployed on a global scale, certainly inscribed in the continuity of the values of modernity, but also likely to respond to what can be identified as a generalized need for affective dependence on technology. More precisely, this need for dependency has become a worldwide and salient issue, because technical materiality, thanks to recent innovations, is succeeding in associating in an unprecedented way the values of modernity compatible with those of the monotheistic religions, while reviving animist values that have never disappeared.
