« L'Amérique post-Trump ». L'expression a fleuri au lendemain de l'investiture de Joe Biden comme président des États-Unis en janvier 2021 alors que le mandat de Donald Trump venait de s'achever par un épisode inédit de contestation des résultats de l'élection présidentielle par le président déchu. Un climat de violence inouïe concluait quatre années d'une présidence non conventionnelle et pleine de rebondissements sous la conduite d'une personnalité pour le moins atypique. Le vocable « post-Trump » est riche de représentations, mais aussi de questionnements. Il véhicule tout d'abord l'idée de rupture, celle de l'avant et de l'après-Trump.Donald Trump a été le révélateur d'un mouvement de fond qui le précédait, mais il en a aussi été le catalyseur, exacerbant tout au long de son mandat les fractures extraordinaires – raciales, sociales et territoriales – qui traversent la société américaine. C'est la deuxième question que soulève l'expression « post-Trump » : quelle a été l'influence réelle de son mandat sur le pays ? Et surtout, quels en seront les effets durables ? Ce numéro de la revue Hérodote distingue un certain nombre de phénomènes qui se sont intensifiés ou qui ont émergé sous sa présidence, au premier rang desquels l'aggravation de la polarisation politique. « Post-Trump America ». The expression flourished following Joe Biden's inauguration as the President of the United States in January 2021. Donald Trump's term had just ended with the unprecedented contestation of the election result by the former president. An incredibly violent atmosphere was the conclusion of four unconventional years, full of unexpected developments, under an atypical leadership. The term « post-Trump America » conveys a lot of representations and images, but a lot of questions, too. It carries the idea of a breaking point – before and after Trump.Donald Trump has revealed a deeper and preexisting movement, that he also catalyzed – aggravating extraordinary racial, social and geographic fractures across American society during his entire term. And here is the second question raised by the term « post-Trump ». What has really been his impact on the country ? And more importantly, what lasting effects will we see ?
