Le but de cet article est de montrer comment dans toutes les guerres dites de pacification, notamment lors des conflits de décolonisations du second XXe siècle, mais, aussi, dans le cadre de conflits beaucoup plus récents, Vietnam, Afghanistan ou Irak, ces doctrines héritent d'un passé colonial proche, directement issu des entreprises impériales occidentales et japonaises du XIXe. Il s'agit aussi de mettre en exergue, notamment, la doctrine française dite de « pacification », toujours attribuée dans l'historiographie à Gallieni et Lyautey, mais dont le véritable penseur fut Théophile Pennequin. This article concerns all pacification wars, not only in the past during the decolonisation conflicts in the second half of the XXth century, but also in more recent conflicts, namely in Vietnam, Afghanistan or even Iraq. The purpose is to show how the doctrines in these pacification wars are based on a recent colonial past and directly inspired by XIXth century Western and Japanese imperialism. The intention is also to highlight the French “pacification” doctrine, that history usually attributes to Gallieni and Lyautey, but whose real thinker was Théophile Pennequin.
