Le séminal Un siècle et demi de contacts culturels à Tanna de Jean Guiart a évité la théorisation anthropologique pour comprendre la société de Tanna au profit de l'écoute et de la préférence pour les histoires que les Tannais se racontent. Cette approche m'a séduit en tant qu'historien désireux de comprendre la construction tannaise de la réalité et a nourri mes recherches sur l'île du milieu des années 1970 à nos jours. Dans cet article, je décris ma collaboration avec Guiart en 1996 pour traduire son texte en anglais. Six versions anglaises se sont succédées depuis cette date et j'explique ici les différences entre les versions. En m'inspirant de ses mémoires Oranges and Lemons et des entretiens que j'ai menés avec lui dans les années 1990, je décris certaines des considérations éthiques et méthodologiques suivies par Guiart pour écrire son œuvre maîtresse. Pour finir, j'applique le concept de « beachcomber » à Guiart sur Tanna pour arriver à une compréhension plus profonde de la signification de son travail de terrain. Jean Guiart's seminal Un siècle et demi de contacts culturels à Tanna eschewed anthropological theorizing for understanding Tannese society in favour of listening to and privileging the stories that the Tannese tell themselves. This approach appealed to me as an historian wanting to understand the Tannese construction of reality, and informed my research on the island from the mid-1970s to the present. As I describe in this paper, in 1996 I collaborated with Guiart to translate his text into English. Since then there have been six English versions, with the differences between them explained in the paper. Drawing from his memoire Oranges and Lemons and interviews I conducted with him in the 1990s, I outline some of the ethical and methodological considerations Guiart gave for writing his magnum opus the way he did. In the final section of the paper, I apply the concept of ‘beachcomber' to Guiart on Tanna to arrive at a deeper understanding of the significance of his fieldwork.
