Comment parvenir à s'imposer, au quotidien et au moindre coût ? Pour qui occupe la position haute dans un rapport de domination, cette question est d'autant plus névralgique quand les protagonistes sont contraints au face-à-face, comme dans la relation employeur-employé de maison, d'hier à aujourd'hui. Pour vérifier l'intensité de ce questionnement, il faut évidemment accéder au for intérieur de celui qui occupe cette position dominante : c'est ce que permettent de faire les quelques pages toujours consacrées aux employés de maison dans les manuels de savoir-vivre échelonnés sur tout le xxe siècle. Entre impitoyables calculs et inavouables anxiétés sociales, on assiste de l'intérieur à la « cuisine » de la domination, et on accède aux catégories d'entendement ordinaires (et relativement stables) du dominant de « proximité ». How to be dominant, on a daily basis, and at the lowest cost? This is a difficult question to avoid for those who occupy the highest position in a relationship of domination. It is all the more important when the protagonists are forced into physical proximity: as in the employer/employee relationship, yesterday and today. Is it possible to access to the representation of the person who occupies this high position, which is often experienced as somewhat acrobatic? This is what the few pages always dedicated to servants in the manuals of good manners from the beginning of the 20th century to present allow us to do. Between ratios and impulses, purely cynical calculations and poorly controlled affects, intense social lucidity and extreme fantasies, we witness from the inside the “kitchen” of domination, that is to say, a fascinating spectrum ranging from rigorous and ruthless cost/benefit calculations to the deep and often unavowable social anxieties that it engenders.
