Le souverain, au Royaume-Uni, a renoncé à la majeure partie des revenus procurés par le domaine royal. Afin de lui permettre d'assurer sa fonction, celle d'un drapeau vivant symbole de l'unité du royaume, le Parlement adopte après chaque couronnement une loi déterminant le montant de la dotation qui lui sera allouée durant son règne. Cette dotation, qui témoigne de la coopération apaisée entre le monarque et son Parlement, a pris dans un premier temps la forme d'une liste civile, avant d'être remplacée par une dotation. In the United Kingdom, the sovereign has relinquished most of the income from the royal domain.
