Le concept d'hétérotopie connait une forte circulation et un attrait certain dans le monde académique français et anglosaxon. Il séduit les chercheurs dont les terrains sont considérés comme sensibles, différents, marginaux. La zad de Notre-Dame-des-Landes et la prison n'y échappent pas : nous avons voulu y voir des hétérotopies. Qu'est-ce que le chercheur signifie en les dénommant ainsi ? Cet article relève d'un propos réflexif sur le rapport du chercheur à son terrain : en se focalisant sur les passages vécus par le chercheur d'un espace présupposé à un autre, l'article met en évidence les médiations qui construisent le terrain hétérotopique et celles qui fondent l'intégration du chercheur à son terrain. Ce faisant, cet article contribue à mettre à l'épreuve le programme foucaldien sur l'hétérotopie, tout en nourrissant les réflexions sur le travail situé du chercheur qui tend à mettre en culture le territoire. The concept of heterotopia has generated increasing interest within both French and anglophone academic circles, appealing to researchers working on sensitive or marginal issues. We analyze our own use of the notion of heterotopia in research we conducted on prisons and on the Notre-Dame-des-Landes protest area or “zad”. The aim of this article is to offer a reflection on the relationship between the researcher and his or her fieldwork. We focus on the researcher's experience in passing from one presupposed space to another. We highlight the mediations which construct the research field as heterotopic as well as those which allow the researcher to integrate the field. This article thus seeks to reexamine the Foucauldian notion of heterotopia and to enrich our understanding of research as a situated work activity by which territories are redefined as cultural experience.
