During the interwar period, the marshals of the Great War were the embodiment of victory and enjoyed an extraordinary level of glorification by their countrymen. These marshals were responsible for supporting – or pushing – a group of ‘colts' who rose to the top of the military hierarchy, and who would go on to assume great responsibilities during the Second World War.
