Par son parcours et par sa biographie, l'historien de l'économie Jürgen Kuczynski (1904-1997) illustre les problématiques et les paradoxes d'une partie des marxistes est-allemands. Issu d'une famille « juive assimilée » de la grande bourgeoisie libérale allemande, il a pourtant été l'un des intellectuels les plus renommés en RDA. Son parcours personnel et académique montre qu'il avait à la fois la formation et les références d'un intellectuel classique allemand et l'engagement politique de l'intelligentsia communiste. Jürgen Kuczynski était un intellectuel cosmopolite polyglotte qui pouvait bénéficier de ses réseaux mais aussi de ses habitus bourgeois pour se présenter comme le « passeur » et l'Avant-garde du socialisme à travers les frontières politiques et intellectuelles du « rideau de fer ». L'ambivalence de cette figure d'intellectuel marxiste au « parcours exemplaire », est éloquente pour illustrer le rôle paradoxal des intellectuels marxistes-bourgeois dans la société est-allemande. The career and the biography of the economic historian Jürgen Kuczynski (1904-1997) illustrate the problems and paradoxes of some East German Marxists. Born into an « assimilated Jewish » family of the German liberal bourgeoisie, he was nevertheless one of the most renowned intellectuals in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). His personal and academic background shows that he had both the training and references of a classical German intellectual and the political commitment of the communist intelligentsia. Jürgen Kuczynski was a polyglot cosmopolitan intellectual who could benefit from his networks but also from his bourgeois habits to present himself as the « ferryman » and the Vanguard of socialism across the political and intellectual borders of the « Iron Curtain ». The ambivalence of this figure of Marxist intellectual with an « exemplary career » is eloquent in illustrating the paradoxical role of Marxist-bourgeois intellectuals in East German society.
