La langue française, plus que toute autre langue, a toujours joué un rôle dans la diplomatie et les relations internationales. Elle a progressivement servi de fondement à la construction d'un espace linguistique tout à fait particulier et identifié, l'espace francophone. L'Organisation internationale de la Francophonie, où se sont retrouvés, depuis les années 1970, quatre-vingt-huit États et gouvernements ayant en commun l'usage du français, fait de cette langue un levier d'influence politique et diplomatique, pour la promouvoir, au même titre que la diversité culturelle et linguistique, au service de la solidarité, du développement et de l'État de droit. The French language, more than any other language, has always played a role in diplomacy and international relations. It is the foundation of the construction of the francophone area, a special and well-identified linguistic space. Since the 1970s, the International Organisation of La Francophonie has gradually regrouped eighty-eight states and governments that share the use of the French language. It has used this language as a lever of political and diplomatic influence and has promoted it, along with cultural and linguistic diversity, in support of solidarity, development and the state of law.
