La Mort Artu est parfois perçue comme une œuvre d'inspiration apocalyptique par la critique arthurienne, bien que l'imaginaire apocalyptique (au sens strict) y tienne une part relativement réduite. Il est toutefois possible de mener une étude sur l'imaginaire apocalyptique de la Mort Artu en considérant le terme « apocalypse » dans un sens élargi. D'une part, la Mort Artu est un roman de la fin, qui insiste sur l'effet de clôture au sein du cycle arthurien : il s'apparente par conséquent à une apocalypse dans un sens eschatologique. D'autre part, si l'on repart du sens étymologique du terme « apocalypse », on peut lire la Mort Artu comme la révélation d'une vérité – la relation entre Lancelot et Guenièvre – qui ne serait pas transcendante, mais immanente : cette révélation, toute profane qu'elle soit, entraîne la chute du royaume arthurien, rejoignant ainsi l'interprétation catastrophiste du terme « apocalypse ». Arthurian critics sometimes consider the Mort Artu as a work of apocalyptic inspiration, although the apocalyptic imagination (in the strict sense) plays a relatively small part in it. It is possible, however, to conduct a study of the apocalyptic imaginary of the Mort Artu by considering the term “apocalypse” in a broader sense. On the one hand, the Mort Artu is a novel about the end, insisting on the effect of closure within the Arthurian cycle: it is therefore similar to an apocalypse in an eschatological sense. On the other hand, if we go back to the etymological meaning of the term “apocalypse,” we can read the Mort Artu as the revelation of a truth—the relationship between Lancelot and Guinevere—that would not be transcendent, but immanent. This revelation, however profane it may be, leads to the fall of the Arthurian kingdom, thus aligning with the catastrophist interpretation of the term “apocalypse”.
